Seek: In the Fall

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Hebrews 13:8 NLT

Unlike many of my friends, I am not mourning the end of summer. Don’t get me wrong, I had fun frequenting the coast, eating meals outside, and enjoying lazy sleep-in days.  But if you asked me to rank the seasons in order of how much I love them, summer would be on the bottom of the list (and my birthday is even in June!).

It could be the six years my family lived in the Arizona heat, or perhaps the fact that I seem to have those sweaty girl genes, but I think I could honestly do without summer weather.  My ideal weather is 55-65 degrees with a slight breeze, cool enough to wear a light sweater. Give me instead all of the cozy sweaters, apple picking, corn mazes, and pumpkin everything.

Another thing I love so much about fall (and spring, for that matter), is all the change that comes with it.  I’ve never shied away from change.  In fact, I rather thrive on it.  I love going new places, trying new foods, and meeting new people.  And as the seasons change I absolutely love watching the leaves change bright hues of yellow, orange, and red.  There is something wildly beautiful about the tall trees shedding their summer green, covering the sidewalks with crunchy leaves.

I know not everyone gets excited about change or new experiences like me.  If that’s you, I’ve got something exiting to tell you.  Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.  He never changes.  His character, his love for you, his promises are the same today as they were thousands of years ago when he walked this earth.  Let’s be honest, even if you do love change, what a comfort it is to know we can always rely on the unchanging attributes of God.

Why should we care that God’s character does not change like the leaves or the seasons?  Because once we know him, we can trust and rely on him.  We can read his word and know his stance on pretty much anything.  In a world full of leaders that seem to be constantly changing their opinions daily or backtracking or deciding that what used to matter no longer does, it can sometimes give us emotional whiplash.  But when we look to God, we can be sure that he is who he says he is.

I pray this fall that you are able to take some time as the seasons change to sit and spend time with the one who never does.

May you Seek + Sojourn more,

Teddi Jo
