Seek: Above the Clouds

“God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.” Psalm 53:2

My winter happy place is definitely in the mountains. I am lucky enough to live within driving distance of several beautiful mountain ranges, and even from a young age I can remember the feeling of looking out the car window and watching the snowy trees pass by.

While I love a cozy snow day indoors by the fire with a good book, my family does not shy away from exploring the mountains in the snow. Skiing is one of our favorite activities, and we have also been known to sled, hike and walk in the snow.

Possibly my favorite thing about winter is that every January, my husband and I take a weeklong trip, just the two of us, into the mountains. We’ve been to Big Sky, Banff, Tahoe, and Schweitzer, just to name a few. This week we are exploring the beautiful mountains of Idaho, from Sun Valley to McCall.

As we started the week, we didn’t see any of the sprawling mountain views that keep me coming back to the hill. Clouds were everywhere, and often we couldn’t see further than 20 feet ahead. When all you can see is the inside of a cloud, the mountains start to lose some of their luster… but that all changed one day.

At the base of the hill, looking up, all we saw were clouds. Riding the gondola, we caught glimpses of blue skies giving us hope. Then, towards the top, we rose above the clouds and were treated with some of the best views we’ve seen to date! A panoramic view of jagged snowy peaks brought me so much joy, even more beautiful as the city below was covered in clouds.

Sometimes we are stuck in the clouds. We can’t see what lies ahead, and we forget the beauty that is all around us. But then, on a sunny day or up on a mountaintop, we are reminded that God’s beautiful creation has not left us. It has always been with us, even when we could not see it.

If you’re in a season where you are down in the valley amidst the clouds, take a moment to breathe and pray. Ask God to remind you of all of the beautiful things he has created, and the wonderful things he has done in your life. There is a sunny day around the corner.

May you Seek + Sojourn more,

Teddi Jo
